The key components of the company's ethos are environmental sympathy and innovation. This ethos drives decisions at every level within the company.
Environmental sympathy affects what machines the company have, how they use them, how they design and build specialist modifications for those machines. This focus also influences recruitment and training of people. DMS understands how to operate with absolute minimal damage, and makes good any damage done before declaring the project complete. They take pride in planning and designing projects, where decisions are based on what looks right, what the right materials are to use, the right seed for the area, and using the local traditional design for elements such as gates and walls. This respect for tradition and environment ensure that, at the conclusion of the project, the work fits and compliments the surroundings.
Whilst the overall effect is traditional, some of the materials may be modern. Materials like plastics and concrete are used where the modern day demands on the facility warrant it, however, they are hidden and a traditional facade will prevail.
Several of the company’s machines have been specially adapted for work on moorland and heath land areas. Importantly, the use of dualled wheels on many of the company’s machines means that, as well as minimum impact on sensitive vegetation, there is very little impact on subsurface structures due to low ground pressure on soft and boggy ground. Also, several methods have been established and specialist machines developed that enable rebuilding steep narrow and embanked tracks without need for large turning round areas or banking damage.
The company continues to innovate by sourcing and using specialist equipment. For example, a recently acquired road/path crusher can crush stone already in place and make it level no matter how rough the path or road. There is also the possibility of incorporating a binding agent to stabilize the material and make it as solid as concrete - although not suited to moorland tracks it is ideal for roads, access tracks, paths, car parks and hard standing areas at lower heights and the use of existing material makes it relatively inexpensive and very environmentally friendly.
We value our reputation in our market and would always seek to avoid bringing it into jeopardy. There are always times when we could under specify projects so that we can pitch the price just to 'get the contract', however, we don't operate like that. To do so would mean that our work would not bear close scrutiny and would not be durable for the long term. In short, we only propose and price for work, where, should we be lucky enough to be awarded the work, the finished project will bear close scrutiny and be a durable long term solution. Moreover, where projects are funded from the public purse, we only bid for projects where it is clear that the project will provide a good solution and good value for money.
